Student of the Week

Student of the Week - Isabelle Stanley

Isabelle joined last summer after hearing about classes from a friend who was a current student.  Isabelle was an advanced student but had never explored watercolors.  She has been working with watercolors for a year now and just finished this amazing painting called 'Papaya'.

Student of the Week - Mariana Ma

Marina Ma started Developing Artists at the age of six.  She has progressed steadily through the 'Design and Color' program and completed her first watercolor painting in June.  Marina had to first create a decorative design for the 'Motif' project.  After the sketch was completed she had to decide how to display the design to the viewer.  She traced the image four times onto the watercolor paper utilizing the 'reverse image' technique.  After selecting her colors, she skillfully painted her colorful floral motif.

Student of the Week - Cutler Whitmore

Cutler heard about Developing Artists from his brother, a previous student.  He started with an excellent foundation in his drawing skills so in order to add a bit of challenge to his Dragon picture Cutler added a castle in the background.  This added feature along with the road increases depth which expands the visual experience for the viewer.  In addition, Cutler decided to take an unexpected path and present this drawing as nighttime.  Using colored pencils, he successfully patterned his sky after thoughts of the 'The Starry Night' by Vincent van Gogh.

Student of the Week - Elaine Pu

Elaine Pu joined Developing Artists with her friend in March and selected the program 'Design and Color' to learn the basics of art.  This program teaches the elements of art using different projects to get immersed in a specific element and make it visual through their own artwork.  In June Elaine completed the chapter on 'Line', which consummated with her drawing of this Dragon.  She executed the dragon perfectly and skillfully used shading with inviting colors using colored pencils.

Student of the Week - Marina Chen

Marina joined Developing Artists in March and completed her Dragon drawing in June.  She selected the picture from the large collection I have on file.  This is the final drawing in the 'Line' chapter from the 'Design and Color' program.  With this project students learn how to draw the exact look using the graphing technique.  Then they are free to select the media and color scheme of their choice to complete the artwork.

Student of the Week - Emily Whalen

I am starting a weekly series called 'Student of the Week'.  I want to showcase all my students and their latest artwork.  My first student I have chosen to highlight is Emily Whalen, who joined Developing Artists in May 2014 and started with the 'Design and Color' program.  Her first drawing I have posted is her mixed medium 'Circles and Triangles' project, completed in January, done with colored pencils and markers in the geometric shapes series.
The second piece is the last drawing in the geometric shapes series where the goal was to create a landscape/seascape using only geometric shapes.  She used all colored pencils to finish this rendering called 'City' in March.  In this piece she incorporated the technique of scoring the surface before applying the colored pencil that ultimately shows off the lines as white against the dark sky.
The last piece on display is the artwork she did for her invented texture project called 'Pyro' which she finished in June.  She created the image and then invented different textures and patterns to fill each of the shapes in color pencil.
