Arial River View by Ivan Chan

This is Ivan's first pen & ink which came out extremely successful.  This is the third project learning about the element of art called Texture. Students select a color photo based on texture and not the colors and must invent their own textures that will simulate the textures found in the photo.  In order to start their drawing they must convert the colors into values; value refers to the lightness or darkness of an area.  To produce a darker area the lines in a texture have to be places closer and closer together; sometimes the colors have the same value as the color next to it so the student must decide how to develop contrast. An artist produces contrast when they are able to show a distinction between two areas that have the same value which demands an intense thought process to work through all the decisions that have to be made.  Pen & ink is not for the impatient as this type of media usually takes longer than any other to complete.  I am so proud of Ivan for his perseverance and happy temperament.
