This type of composition is called a motif. Students first have to create a design and then repeat the design four times. They have learned about switching positive with the negative space and introduced to reverse imaging. The original design started in the upper left corner, then flipped to the right, then turned again but this time top to bottom. Then the image in the lower left was reversed again to the left. Once the image has been traced the student then selects the color scheme for the painting. I love how she alternated with kiddy-corner colors.
