For this drawing Elaine used crayons to take a rubbing of many different uneven surface textures to create this skillful composition. This type of art technique is called Frottage, which comes from the french word meaning 'to rub'. There are two major categories of actual or real textures; natural and man-made. Examples of natural textures would be tree bark, leaves, shells and fossils. Screens, combs, vacuum filter, screw and sandpaper would be examples of man-made textures. Elaine was very cleaver in how she merged all the color and textures into this successful abstract.
