Student of the Week - Barry Wang

Barry just started studying with me in September along with his sister Crystal.  Barry and his sister had just moved here and wanted to continue with their art training.  Barry’s goal is to learn to be stronger at drawing;  his first project was to do a Dragon using the graphing technique.  Using a pencil Barry had to apply vertical and horizontal lines on top of the image to divide it into equal sections.  Then he had to ruler in those same lines onto his paper.  The squared off sections assist in helping the student see more clearly where things are placed in relation to the other parts.  After drawing the contour of the dragon correctly he used colored pencils to finish this piece of art.  I showed Barry how to curve his lines while placing in the values on the dragon’s body to make it look more three-dimensional.  Barry called his dragon 'Eragon'.  It was this drawing that was selected to be published in the Spring 2016 book of the 'Celebrating Art' national student art contest. He just finished his second drawing of this butterfly also rendered in colored pencils.
